Panama City Beach vs Mexico Beach: Which Is Right for Your Family?

Este artículo está en inglés por ahora. La versión en español llegará muy pronto.

Trying to choose between Panama City Beach vs Mexico Beach for your next Florida vacation? We own vacation homes in both towns, so we get this question all the time. The two beaches are only about 35 miles apart on the Florida Panhandle, yet they feel like completely different trips.

Here's the honest comparison we give our own guests.

The short answer

  • Choose Panama City Beach if your family wants action: resort pools, restaurants, attractions, shopping and something new to do every day.
  • Choose Mexico Beach if you want quiet: an uncrowded beach, no high-rises, fishing, sunsets and a slower Old Florida pace.
  • Can't decide? Stay in one and spend a day in the other. The drive along US-98 takes under an hour.

Panama City Beach at a glance

Panama City Beach is the Panhandle's classic family beach town. White sand, emerald water and a long stretch of Gulf-front resorts give you that big Florida vacation feeling.

  • The beach: wide, white and lined with condo towers, so beach access is easy from almost anywhere.
  • Things to do: Pier Park and the SkyWheel, dolphin tours, Shell Island, St. Andrews State Park, mini golf, Pirates Voyage dinner show, Topgolf and dozens of restaurants.
  • Where to stay: beachfront condos with resort amenities are the sweet spot. At Tidewater Beach Resort, for example, you get lagoon pools, an indoor heated pool, hot tubs, a movie theater and private beach access without leaving the property.
  • Good to know: March is spring break season, and the city bans alcohol on the beach that month. Summer is busy, and elevators and restaurants get crowded at peak times.

Mexico Beach at a glance

Mexico Beach sits on Florida's Forgotten Coast, about 24 miles southeast of Panama City. It has about five miles of beach, no high-rise hotels and no spring break crowds.

  • The beach: quiet, wide open and perfect for shelling and sunsets. There are no lifeguards, so families should always check the beach flags.
  • Things to do: fishing from the shore or a charter, kayaking and paddleboarding, snorkeling and diving on artificial reefs, dolphin eco-tours, and a day trip to the Cape San Blas Lighthouse.
  • Where to stay: beach houses and townhomes, many on canals with private docks. Our home, Beach Red-E, has a boardwalk and dock right outside the back door and a pool and hot tub steps away.
  • Good to know: the town was hit hard by Hurricane Michael in 2018 and has rebuilt beautifully. Dining is casual and local, so plan on fresh seafood rather than chain restaurants.

Side-by-side comparison

Lifeguards Yes, in season at many beach areas None

Which one is better for families with young kids?

Both work, for different reasons. Panama City Beach makes rainy days easy with indoor pools, arcades and attractions. Mexico Beach makes beach days easy: less crowding, calm evenings and kids catching their first fish off the dock. One young guest at our Mexico Beach home was, in his dad's words, shaking with joy when he caught his first fish.

Which one is better for big groups?

Panama City Beach usually wins for large groups, simply because there are more options. Instead of renting one large house, many families book two condos side by side. Our Tidewater 1702 and 1703 condos sit next to each other on the same floor and sleep up to 16 together, with two kitchens and five full bathrooms. Our honest recommendation

If this is your family's first Panhandle trip, start with Panama City Beach. If you've done the busy beach before and want something peaceful, Mexico Beach will feel like a secret you'll want to keep.
